Full-featured 5G can provide substantially more capability than industrial gateways, surveillance equipment, energy systems or aftermarket automotive devices actually require, while remaining on LTE indefinitely may complicate longer-term product planning.<\/p>\n<p>That middle ground is where 5G RedCap is increasingly being positioned. Fibocom\u2019s new RU311 module series takes a particularly migration-oriented approach, combining 5G RedCap with LTE Cat.4 compatibility and hardware options intended to limit the amount of redesign required when an OEM moves an existing product platform toward 5G.<\/p>\n<p>Built on the UNISOC V527 platform, the RU311 supports dual-mode 5G RedCap and LTE Cat.4 connectivity. Fibocom specifies peak RedCap data rates of up to 226 Mbps downlink and 120 Mbps uplink, compared with 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps respectively in LTE mode.<\/p>\n<p>Those figures are well below the performance normally associated with conventional 5G broadband devices, but that is largely the point. Applications such as status reporting, remote control, video uplink, mobile broadband access and industrial data transmission do not necessarily require a higher-end 5G implementation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why hardware compatibility matters<\/h2>\n<p>The most interesting aspect of the RU311 announcement is not its headline data rate, but the attention given to migration from existing cellular designs.<\/p>\n<p>The LGA version measures 32 mm \u00d7 29 mm \u00d7 2.4 mm, with a pin layout developed with compatibility considerations for Fibocom\u2019s FG132 RedCap module and its NL668 and L716 LTE Cat.4 modules. The objective is to make it easier for device manufacturers to develop 4G and 5G products around compatible hardware architectures.<\/p>\n<p>This is significant because changing cellular generations rarely means changing only the modem. A new module can require motherboard modifications, interface adaptation, testing, validation and another product introduction cycle. For an OEM with an existing Cat.4 product, reducing those changes can therefore be at least as important as the radio performance itself.<\/p>\n<p>The practical implication is that RedCap can be introduced as an incremental product evolution rather than necessarily forcing a complete redesign. That is particularly relevant for industrial and embedded devices with long development and deployment cycles.<\/p>\n<h2>Multiple paths for integrating RedCap<\/h2>\n<p>Fibocom is offering the RU311 in LGA, M.2 and Mini PCIe form factors. The M.2 version is positioned for rapid validation and platform integration, while Mini PCIe is aimed at equipment including industrial gateways, routers, industrial PCs and other embedded platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The module series supports protocols including TCP\/UDP, HTTP\/HTTPS, SSL and MQTT, together with interfaces such as USB, UART, RGMII, SDIO, I2C, SPI and GPIO.<\/p>\n<p>For OEMs and system integrators, the combination of several form factors and compatibility with existing Cat.4 designs provides different routes into RedCap. Manufacturers developing new boards can use the LGA version, while companies working with modular industrial platforms can evaluate M.2 or Mini PCIe without following the same integration path.<\/p>\n<h2>RedCap as a bridge between LTE and full 5G<\/h2>\n<p>The broader significance is that RedCap is increasingly being positioned as a bridge between LTE-era IoT hardware and the 5G ecosystem rather than simply as another 5G device category.<\/p>\n<p>With the RU311, Fibocom is applying that positioning specifically to the problem of upgrading existing Cat.4 products.
