But the world in which it flourished was very different from the one business leaders inhabit today.<\/p>\n<p>One reason is that we have entered what I call the \u201cglasshouse economy\u201d, an era in which artificial intelligence, social media and universal connectivity are making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/opinion-features\/good-corporate-governance-and-transparency-win-win-investors-and-companies\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">corporate behaviour <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/opinion-features\/good-corporate-governance-and-transparency-win-win-investors-and-companies\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">radically more transparent<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ACROSS my time working in and leading very different organisations, one idea remained remarkably persistent: The primary purpose of business was to maximise shareholder returns.<br \/>\nFor much of the past half-century, that assumption has been associated with American economist Milton Friedman.
