Mercedes-Benz Launches Hybrid, EV CLA Sedan in Mexico

Mercedes-Benz Mexico has introduced the third generation of its CLA luxury compact sedan, launching the model simultaneously with mild-hybrid and battery-electric powertrains built on the same body architecture. The vehicle, launched for the Mexican market as the CLA 2027, was officially presented during an event held at the historic Ex-Convento de San Hipólito in Mexico City, which included a live performance by Mexican singer Humbe.

Developed as the first entry in a streamlined family of compact luxury vehicles, the new CLA debuts on the brand's Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). The entry-level CLA 200 Hybrid carries a starting price of MX$955,900 (US$56,578). Official pricing for the fully electric CLA 200 variant has not yet been announced.

Powertrain and Mechanical Specifications

The 2027 CLA architecture accommodates two distinct electrification configurations on a single chassis:

• CLA 200 Hybrid: The hybrid powertrain pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with an integrated 48-volt electric generator and a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. Power is routed to the front axle through an eight-speed 8G-eDCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. The combined system produces 163 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, enabling 0–100 km/h acceleration in 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 232 km/h. Homologated fuel consumption is rated at 4.9 to 5.4 l/100 km (18.0 to 20.4 km/l).
• CLA 200 Electric: The fully electric model features a single rear-mounted electric motor delivering 165 kW (221–224 hp) and 247 lb-ft of torque, paired with a two-speed automatic transmission. Utilizing a 58 kWh usable-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture, the sedan offers a driving range of up to 542 km under the WLTP test cycle. The model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h.

DC fast-charging capabilities allow the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes at maximum rates of up to 200 kW. Alternating current (AC) charging at 7.4 kW requires roughly 6.5 hours for a full charge. The electric variant also features a brake-by-wire One-Box braking system with up to 200 kW of energy recovery (capable of up to 268 hp during regeneration) and a multi-source heat pump that harvests residual heat from the electrical drive, battery, and ambient air.

Dimensions and Aerodynamic Profile

The vehicle features a drag coefficient of 0.21, achieved through flush door handles, a fully paneled underbody, and sealed front air intakes.

Standard styling includes the Progressive Line package with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, and chrome grille accents. Optional AMG Line and AMG Line Plus Premium packages upgrade the sedan with 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, restyled aprons, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, and an illuminated star-pattern front grille.

Software and Cabling Architecture

The model introduces MB.OS, the proprietary operating system developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz to support over-the-air (OTA) updates for safety systems and infotainment throughout the vehicle's lifespan.

The fourth-generation MBUX system incorporates voice control via "Hey Mercedes" alongside AI integration supported by Microsoft and Google technology. Standard interior equipment features a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 14-inch central touchscreen, 5G connectivity, augmented reality navigation, wireless smartphone integration, and a panoramic sunroof.

Optional configurations add the MBUX Superscreen layout, which incorporates a third 14-inch display for the front passenger supporting video streaming, games, and video conferencing while parked. Available options include a 16-speaker, 850-watt Burmester 3D Surround Sound system, a head-up display, and 64-color ambient lighting. Advanced safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane maintenance assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system.

Market Position and Awards

Before arriving in the Mexican market, the electric CLA was named European Car of the Year 2026 by a jury of 60 automotive journalists from 23 countries, earning 320 points. It also received a five-star Green NCAP rating with a 91% overall score.

The entry of the CLA 2027 places Mercedes-Benz in direct competition with local market rivals such as the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and Audi A3 Sedan, establishing the CLA as the only entry in its premium compact class to offer both hybrid and fully electric propulsion options on a single chassis.
